The Atlas and Ascent Go Head to Head

Picking out your next family vehicle is a big deal. You want to make sure it’s exactly right for you and your crew. That’s why Trend Motors Volkswagen likes to show you a side-by-side comparison of the different options out there to help make your decision easier. Let’s look at the 2019 VW Atlas vs. the 2019 Subaru Ascent – two SUVs with a lot to offer.

Size Matters

While both the Atlas and the Ascent offer third-row seating, the Subaru Ascent is able to seat one extra person. The VW Atlas makes up for that though, with its easy-access design and spacious legroom. So if you don’t need to seat more than seven, the Atlas might just be your best bet. The third row is notoriously cramped in a lot of SUVS, but the Atlas makes it comfortable even for teenagers and adults.

When you’re hauling cargo instead of passengers, it’s important to consider the volume of each SUV, too. The Subaru has up to 86.5 cubic feet of space. The Volkswagen, on the other hand, has up to 96.8 cubic feet, offering slightly more room for strollers, sports equipment, outdoor gear and more.

Performance, Safety and Technology

These models come with a lot of similar amenities, including panoramic roofs, 8” infotainment screens and tons of cup holders. But there are some differences, too. For example, the Subaru boasts 360° of visibility, but the Volkswagen Atlas also offers an available overhead view camera to help you keep an eye on your surroundings and navigate with ease.

In addition, the Atlas offers slightly better fuel economy than the Ascent, as well as slightly more horsepower. On the Atlas, you can get a 3.6L V6 engine with 276 hp. The Ascent is equipped with a 2.4L 260-hp turbocharged engine. Both models can tow up to 5,000 pounds. As far as safety goes, both provide a full suite of advanced features. The VW Atlas even earned an NHTSA 5-star safety rating.
