The Golf GTI is the sportier sibling of the Golf, which means drivers can expect a potent engine option. A 2.0-liter turbo four delivers 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Paired with the engine is a standard manual transmission, while the DSG automatic is available for a smoother experience.
New for the model year is the 6.5-inch MIB II infotainment system which has a responsive capacitive touchscreen. All trim levels receive the advanced system, which brings with it App-Connect features, allowing for improved smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink.
When talking about a well-rounded automobile, an excellent balance between power and fuel-economy is a must. The 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is much more powerful than the standard Golf, but its fuel-efficiency numbers don’t fall far behind as it earns an EPA-estimated 25 city and 34 highway mpg rating.
One thing that too often goes overlooked in vehicles that aim for performance are the safety aspects of the model. This year VW has updated the available Driver Assistance Package, which adds on premium features to help avoid accidents. The Driver Assistance Package is available on SE and Autobahn models and now include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, parking steering assistant and blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert. Between this new feature, the MIB II system and the USB port replacing the proprietary MDI port, the few things owners disliked about the 2015 model year have all been resolved.
This year the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI two-door models are available by order only, while the four-door models are now available at dealerships across the country.
